From Self-Doubt and Emotional Paralysis to Clarity, Confidence, and Self-Trust

T.H.’s Story of Navigating Divorce as a High-Achieving Physician

“I didn’t trust my own judgment, even though I was confident in every other area of my life.”

T.H., a successful physician, found herself questioning her marriage yet unable to fully commit to the idea of divorce.

When she first started this process, she wasn’t even sure she could say the word “divorce” out loud.

She’d talked to a friend about it, but hadn’t fully committed to the idea of divorce. She just knew something wasn’t right, and had no idea where to start.

“I didn’t know what the process looked like, what my rights were, or what I was even supposed to do next.”

She’s a physician, someone who’s used to making critical decisions every day. But when it came to her marriage, she had what she described as a lack of trust in my own opinion.”

From the outside, she was highly capable and accomplished. But internally, she felt uncertain, emotionally overwhelmed, and disconnected from her own voice and decision-making.

Not knowing if she wanted a divorce, but knowing something had to change, she called me.

Before Divorce Coaching, T.H. was…

  • Lacking trust in her own judgment despite being highly competent in other areas of life
  • Overwhelmed by the unknowns of the divorce process (this is so common)
  • Driven by perfectionism and a need to please others before considering herself
  • Viewing the end of her marriage as a personal failure
  • Working hard to maintain a role she no longer wanted to be in

Through Reinvention Coaching

Through our work together, she experienced a completely different kind of support than she expected. The kind of support she didn’t know she needed until she received it.

Instead of being given a checklist, she was guided to uncover her own truth, what she truly desired and needed, not what was expected of her.

“When I first spoke to Sharri, I was a complete mess. I couldn’t even talk for the first part of the call. But instead of giving me a checklist or telling me what to do, she asked me to really look at what I was feeling and what I actually wanted.

Even though I didn’t know it yet, that’s exactly what I needed.”

We did a lot of work around T.H. trusting herself, understanding that her opinion is valid, and that she doesn’t have to justify it to anyone.

I had a strong tendency toward perfectionism and wanting to please everyone else before considering myself. I realized that was a big part of what was keeping me stuck.”

What stood out most:

  • She came for divorce guidance, which she received, but she got something more valuable: she learned to trust herself and started relying on her own judgment.
  • She saw what had actually been driving her for years: the need to keep everyone comfortable, the belief that ending her marriage meant she had failed, and the habit of putting herself last and calling it being a good mother, a good wife, a good doctor.
  • She didn’t just think differently; she felt and moved through life differently.

After working together, T.H. shared: I don’t have to justify my needs or desires to anyone. My opinion is my opinion, and no is a complete sentence.”

Life After Reinvention Coaching

She catches herself doing so many things differently. Instead of immediately judging herself, she steps back and looks at why something happened instead of beating herself up over what happened.

In addition, her relationship with her kids and to her future has benefitted from our work together.

“My relationship with my kids has changed. I’m more present. I’m less reactive. I’m able to give them space instead of trying to control everything.”

The biggest shift is how she sees her future. “Before, it felt like I was trying to escape something. Now, I feel like I’m moving toward a life I deeply want.

I believe I can be whatever I want beyond this divorce.

The shifts she experienced were both internal and tangible. She described:

  • A growing ability to trust her own opinion without needing justification
  • A significant reduction in self-judgment and perfectionism
  • A new capacity to pause and reflect instead of reacting or criticizing herself
  • A more present, grounded relationship with her children
  • The confidence to take action on decisions she previously avoided

T.H. also shared that she’s now able to take steps she previously would have been too afraid to take. One of which was ultimately deciding to move forward and file for divorce.

With the right tools and guidance, you don’t have to stay stuck in uncertainty, self-doubt, or fear of what comes next.

Whether you know something in your marriage needs to change but you’re not sure divorce is the next step, or you’re already getting divorced and you want to feel more grounded and confident as you navigate the process, you don’t have to keep second-guessing yourself, putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own, or waiting until you feel certain before you take a step forward.

You can stop going back and forth over every decision. Have difficult conversations without questioning everything you said afterward. Be there for your children without abandoning yourself. And make choices based on what you want, not simply what will keep everyone else happy.
